R &R in Chauvigny

The medieval town of Chauvigny is perched overlooking our campsite. Here's our evening view.

The campground is accessed through a city park with a duck pond where there were several Ruddy Shelducks.

Several churches/castles/fortifications loom over the park.

For our rest day we savored a leisurely lunch at an outdoor cafe on the main square. It was filled with folks who looked like locals and we all lingered over the great meal. We finished up with a cheese platter, feeling rather pleased with our day.

After lunch we ran errands in the new part of town and headed up to the medieval portion. Chauvigny was a stronghold for the French Resistance in WWII and as a result the Germans bombed it extensively during their retreat. Many structures are in ruins.

One structure that stands intact is the Saint Pierre Collegiate Church some of its original stones date from the 11th century.

Although it was a quiet day here, we saw several residential streets and a few restaurants that seemed almost untouched by time.

Looking over the ramparts, our campsite was just visible.
We took these steps back down to our campsite.
We are about to settle in to online cards (bridge) with Jane, as we do most Mondays. An ideal rest day before our planned rides in the next few days which feature some climbs.
