When I say "mud bath" I do not mean we spent the day pampering ourselves at a French spa. Au contraire! The day began at our emergency hotel, packing up the bikes for Day 2. Just as the packing was complete, I noticed that my rear tire was flat. Yes, Flat Tire #2, and we hadn't even begun pedaling on Day 2. 😞
We located the nearest bike shop and followed the recommended route along the muddiest trail I have ever tried to bike on. But we prevailed. SCBikes in Soisy-sue-Seine saved the day! I opted for two new tires and two super-duper puncture resistant tubes. (Still disappointed that when I asked for two spare tubes to take along on the trip, from a bike mechanic who had just serviced my bike, I was given tubes with Schrader valves when I needed Presta valves and I failed to notice that until I went to install them. But Mo's spare came to my rescue yesterday, and Mo's patched spare got me as far as the bike shop. 😚)
Once we were back on the EV-3 and headed to Melun we had the most idyllic ride. Spring flowers are everywhere, delightful architecture catches our eyes,
and we meet the most delightful and helpful people along the way.
Plus, our first Deux Chevaux of le Tour!
The final lesson of the day was that things are not always as dire as they first appear.
This railroad crossing appeared totally closed, and we needed to get across the tracks to get to our campground. We pulled out our phones to look for the closest detour only to witness a local woman walk right across. Turns out it was not closed to piétons (pedestrians). We rolled right across!

Okay Mary; no more flat tires for you!!! That God for Mo!! Great scenery and hope the campground is nice. Regi
ReplyDeleteYes, that is enough flats for one trip!!
ReplyDeleteeven though we’re getting multiple stories about those flats but I think we understand that 1) they’re all Mary’s and 2) with sufficient inflation there will be no more! It’s great to hear that you are rolling and soon you’ll be into your: wake, close up, ride, set camp, sleep - rhythm. Sorry about the mud but some say: girls heart dirt! More food stories about French delicacies please. -J
ReplyDeleteRight! less flat tires, more French pastries. We will do our best. – Mo
ReplyDeleteSuch excitement! I’m particularly awed by the vehicle. It was highlighted as the get-away car in a silly French series I’m watching on PBS. Should you need to get away you’ll know what to do!
ReplyDeleteThe obstacles you face! Only the Hayes women can collectively turn them to opportunities for joy, without screaming Merde (have I got that right?!). You all innately have the No mud, No lotus mantra at every measure. Carry on! Love hearing about your day! Lorrie
Hope to hear a run down on French pastries daily😜🥐
