Notre Dame before the fire

Last night we saw a presentation by Peter Henrikson, Grand Marais timber framer, who worked in France for 7 months on the restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral.  The timbers for the roof trusses were hewn by hand from freshly harvested oak.  As part of a team of timber framers, Peter hewed timbers for about 3 months, then laid out trusses, cut the beams and joints, and assembled the trusses.  His team made the 11 trusses on the east end of the cathedral and also worked on the rafters for the apse.

Peter's talk was inspiring and I can't wait to ride by the cathedral!  Restoration is currently scheduled to be completed in December.
